Goddess Parvati, after self-immolation as Sati, took birth as Lord Himalaya’s daughter. Shail, in Sanskrit, means the mountain and Putri refer to daughter and the Goddess was known as the mountains daughter, Shailputri.
Goddess Shailputri is worshipped on the Navaratri’s first day. It is a belief that the Moon is governed by Goddess Shailputri and if there is any bad effect of Moon, by worshipping her it can be overcome.
The Goddess Shailputri mounts on the bull and is also known as Vrisharudha. She carries in her right hand a Trishul and in the left hand a lotus flower. She is also called as Hemavati.
